Lexington Flying Pigs Welcome Dr. A.J. Lewis as New Pitching Coach

Experienced Collegiate Summer Baseball Coach Brings Advanced Pitching Development Expertise and a Passion for Helping Athletes Reach Their Full Potential

LEXINGTON, NC – October 12, 2026 – The Lexington Flying Pigs are excited to announce the addition of Dr. A.J. Lewis as the team's new Pitching Coach. With five seasons of collegiate summer baseball coaching experience, advanced training in pitching mechanics and player development, and a lifelong passion for the game, Lewis brings a unique combination of expertise, mentorship, and dedication to the Flying Pigs organization.

A Winston-Salem native, Lewis has built an impressive career both on and off the baseball field. He attended Reynolds High School before transferring to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. A catcher during his high school playing career, Lewis pursued a walk-on opportunity at Wake Forest University before an elbow injury ended his playing aspirations. While his path as a player changed, his passion for baseball never faded.

Lewis went on to earn his medical degree from Wake Forest University and currently practices medicine at Novant Health Valaoras & Lewis OB/GYN in Winston-Salem. His medical background, combined with years of specialized pitching education, provides a unique perspective on athlete development, performance, and arm health.

His coaching journey began with his two sons, whom he coached from T-ball through high school, competing on both local and national stages. As both developed into elite pitchers, Lewis immersed himself in the science of pitching mechanics, velocity development, arm care, and pitch design.

In 2019, Lewis became one of the first remote trainers certified by Driveline Baseball, a nationally recognized leader in data-driven baseball player development. He continued expanding his expertise through certification with the Florida Baseball Ranch, now known as The Armory, and additional education with the Texas Baseball Ranch.

Lewis also spent two years as a pitching consultant at West Forsyth High School, where he helped develop six pitchers who went on to compete at the NCAA Division I level.

In 2021, Lewis was named the inaugural pitching coach for the Carolina Disco Turkeys, a collegiate summer baseball organization. During his five seasons with the team, he worked with pitchers from Division I and junior college programs, helping athletes refine their mechanics, develop velocity, improve pitch effectiveness, and prepare for the demands of collegiate competition.

Now, Lewis brings that experience and individualized coaching philosophy to the Lexington Flying Pigs.

"Player development is a huge part of what we do with the Flying Pigs," said Danny Kirkman, Owner and CEO of Flying Pigs Sports. "We want our players to leave here better than when they arrived, both on and off the field. Dr. Lewis brings a tremendous amount of knowledge, experience, and passion for developing pitchers. His understanding of the mechanics and science behind pitching, combined with his commitment to building relationships with players, makes him a fantastic addition to our coaching staff."

Lewis emphasizes an individualized approach to pitching development, recognizing that every athlete brings different strengths, mechanics, and opportunities for improvement. His philosophy focuses on improving movement efficiency, building sustainable velocity, refining pitch arsenals, and establishing healthy arm-care practices that support long-term performance.

Beyond his coaching credentials, Lewis has deep roots in the Piedmont Triad community. Throughout his medical career, he has delivered approximately 8,000 babies, including several young men he would eventually coach on the baseball field.

That remarkable connection between his medical career and his work in baseball reflects a lifelong commitment to investing in the next generation.

"One of the things that makes collegiate summer baseball special is the opportunity to impact young athletes during such an important stage of their development," added Kirkman. "Having someone like Dr. Lewis, who has dedicated so much of his life to helping others, fits perfectly with the culture we're continuing to build in Lexington."

The addition of Lewis reinforces the Flying Pigs' commitment to providing collegiate athletes with a high-quality summer baseball experience that combines competitive play, professional-level development opportunities, and meaningful community engagement.

The Flying Pigs have established themselves as one of the Old North State League's most successful organizations, capturing three consecutive division titles, including the 2026 Western Division Championship. As the organization looks ahead to the 2027 season, Lewis will play an important role in continuing that tradition of excellence while helping prepare the next generation of collegiate pitchers for success.

"We're excited to welcome Dr. Lewis to the Flying Pigs family and look forward to the impact he'll have on our players and our organization," said Kirkman.
